Living Lessons contributor Melanie Rigney spent more years than she cares to remember as an editor—at Writer’s Digest, Advertising Age, Thomson Financial Publishing, Macmillan Computer Publishing, and United Press International. But it took a return to her Catholic roots in 2005 to identify herself as a writer.

“I’d been away from God for thirty years, not so much because I didn’t believe in Him as because I couldn’t believe He loved me,” Melanie says. “His presence as I dealt with a move to a new city, a divorce, and repayment of nearly $110,000 in credit card debt helped convince me that I am lovable.”

One of the people who helped her find her way back to faith was Patricia Lorenz, who is the subject of Melanie’s entry in Living Lessons. “Pat’s been my best friend almost from the week I met her,” Melanie says. “We’re both writers, but we’re very different in many ways—she has kids and grandkids, I don’t; I have a demanding day job; she doesn’t. And yet, we learn so much from each other.”

In addition to Living Lessons, Melanie is a regular contributor to Living Faith, the Catholic devotional and to Your Daily Tripod (yourdailytripod.blogspot.com), a Catholic blog. With Anna LaNave, she is the co-author of When They Come Home: Ways to Welcome Returning Catholics (Twenty-third Publications), a book for Catholic parishes about how to help those who have been away from the Church but are making their first stumbling steps back

“I said no when I was first asked to do the book, feeling under qualified to tell parish leaders what to do, and suggested the publisher contact Anna, who facilitated the program for returning Catholics at my parish. Anna said she’d only write it if we did it together. It turned out to be a rich experience, working together, and best of all, we’re still friends!”

These days, in addition to her nonfiction writing, Melanie has caught the fiction bug. Her first novel, about a couple seeking to repair a marriage after twenty years of mistrust and betrayal, is with her agent for consideration. In the meantime, she’s working on a book about a woman who finds forgiveness and redemption decades after causing a deadly car accident.

“For me, the most humbling and satisfying aspect of writing is hearing that my work spoke to someone, frequently in a way I never intended,” Melanie says. One example is that her Living Faith devotionals led to a request for her to lead a retreat, her first ever, in April 2011 in Alabama.

To learn more about the writing side of Melanie’s life, please visit www.melanierigney.com; for the editing side, please visit www.editorforyou.com.

Corley

Living Lessons contributor Lottie B. Corley shares her poem “Trinkets,” which is based on the sad task of removing her mother’s possessions after her passing. Opening her mother’s door revealed a lifetime of love in the trinkets her mother kept.

Thus her poem “Trinkets” begins:

Locket’s of hair and baby barrettes.

Among all the trinkets that she had kept…

Although Lottie is a novice with regards to the publishing side of things, she is building her reputation mainly due to her poem “Trinkets.” Many people cry when they read it because they can relate to losing a loved one.

Lottie (pictured above) has been writing poems, songs and producing pen and ink artwork since the age of six. She attributes her love for writing and drawing from her dear mother, Josephine LoCicero and her husband, Michael Scott Corley who have always encouraged her to never give up and write what you feel, good or bad. “There is never a moment or event that cannot inspire her,” she said.

She is currently working on her memoirs: Trials and Turbulence, which deals with her abusive stepfather. Snags and Snares describes what she went through as a recovering alcoholic. When Panic Attacks talks about her recent diagnosis of panic disorder and the impact it has had on her life. And Truth is Stranger describes her spiritual experiences. Lottie is also currently working on her book of 50 poems that address many subjects including child abuse, infidelity and spirituality.

She has had her share of hard times. After surviving two head-on car accidents and an elevator accident, Lottie is glad to be alive and takes it one day at a time. She has always had to work harder than others to write, due to her dyslexia. Nevertheless, she feels she has overcome many of her obstacles through her writing. In addition to writing books and poetry, Lottie has also written and recorded several songs.

Lottie is now retired after working for several companies in the technology field. She has also worked as a volunteer EMT and had her picture appeared in several magazines for radio control enthusiasts.

Lottie has a huge heart for animals and spends a lot of time rescuing them. On one occasion, she rescued two opossum babies after their mother was shot by a neighbor. One, whom she named “Sweetie Pie” for her sweet and affectionate nature, became her pet and was even potty-trained. Lottie has also rescued birds, dogs, moles and cats, just to name a few. She doesn’t belong to any organizations. “God just brings them to me to care for,” she said.

If you are interested in sampling some of her work, go to <http:>http://www.poetshaven.com and type “Lottie” in the search field.</http:>

Living Lessons Contributor Tina Traster has published a humor collection of essays based on her eponymous New York Post column.

Is it me or is the word suburbia loaded?

Like 'stay-at-home mom' or 'Britney Spears', suburbia has its fans, satirists, detractors. Until 2005, I was smugly ensconced in the third category, a self-styled city slicker who wore black garb, told cabbies the best route to get across town, exchanged intimacies with people riding elevators. Typical New Yorker. Suburbia to me -- a psychologically-scarred Brooklyn-born kid whose family never 'made it' to Long Island -- was an aseptic construct where women over 40 lost their edge and their calf muscles because they spent their days driving to the strip mall and schlepping kids to soccer practice.

"That will never be me," I'd swear to my husband driving over the George Washington Bridge after visiting friends who lived in cavernous colonials with marbled foyers and Labrador retrievers. “Never!”

My lifelong scorn for suburbia enabled me to put up with every city-related inconvenience or absurdity. Circling like a hungry buzzard for a parking spot or keeping windows shut on hot summer nights to drown out whining sirens or the occasional gunshot. Even when I was tripping over my toddler's loot, I believed IKEA was the solution to our ever-shrinking 700-square-foot apartment.

We could not afford a bigger apartment in a steroidal real estate market but I would not contemplate suburbia.

I was mentally and physically asphyxiated by my long-held beliefs that the sticks were filled with people who stopped going to independent films and who ate dinner before 7. Sure I was yearning for room and trees and a driveway but my childhood demons were ninjas. It all started the day my family piled into the yellow Cadillac to see the white house for sale in Long Island. At ten, this was the most glamorous house I'd ever stepped inside of - it was nothing like the cramped ones in Brooklyn. My mother wanted this house and this life more than anything in the world. My father didn't. He thought a Cadillac in his driveway and a detached house in Canarsie was good enough. My mother's brooding and envy for greener pastures turned into scorn for all-things-suburban. An emotionally resourceful woman, she came up with plan B: raise her daughters to worship Manhattan.
