Spotlight: Diana Levin

I wanted to take a moment and introduce you to a wonderful artist, Diana Levin. She illustrates books and designs covers.

She is a multi-passionate gal from LA, California, and I want to do it all.Unfortunately, sometimes she has to specialize in order to find that illusive niche that everyone keeps talking about. She is not just one thing and cannot really define herself as just one thing.

She is an illustrator, but also enjoy other creative endeavors like crafts and handmade and at times find myself obsessed with mixed media and 3D art. Her dream is to gain financial independence through her art business so she can travel the world and experience different cultures and adventures.

You are not going to find cute little teddy bears and happy smiling babies here. If you are looking for cutsy wutsy, you are in the wrong place. Her work is all about monsters, dragons and all sorts of fantasy creatures. It can be cute, but only in a creepy kind of way—definitely not for babies and very small children.

Her work is a profusion of intricate details, organic flowing lines and a touch of a little Art Nouveau here and there. She grew up with a love for dark fairy tales and a deep admiration for Children Book illustrators like Arthur Rackham and Edmund Dulac. Fantasy art for her has always been a way to escape into another world. She believes that an illustrated book should be like a window into a realm of possibilities and adventure, a playground of imagination and fun. And that is exactly what I do—bring stories to life through illustration.There is nothing more exciting for her then to give you a glimpse into a strange new world where anything is possible.

In Memory of Coach John Wooden

After a long and distinguished career, legendary UCLA Basketball Coach, John Wooden, passed away tonight at the age of 99. Most know him as the only coach to win a record-setting 10 NCAA championships, but he was also revered for his character and inspirational words of wisdom on and off the court.

Over the weekend, Whispering Angel Books exhibited at the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books.

Hope Whispers contributors and fellow authors, Brandon Barr and Judy Kirk, joined us for this amazing two-day event that drew over 130,000 enthusiastic readers and writers. During that time, we had the opportunity to meet so many people who were truly interested in and supportive of our books and the spirit of our company.

Judy and Brandon sold and signed copies of their individual books while copies of Hope Whispers and Angel's Dance sold at a brisk pace. Our newsletter, which featured several books written by our contributors, was snatched up by visitors at an even faster pace.

A special thank you to Brandon, Judy, Amanda (& baby Nathan), Jim, and Lynn for staffing our booth and making it a successful event.

Karen Elvin's expressive art works have been in juried shows through Western Pennsylvania and in the Washington D.C. area as well as a Lilly co-sponsored travel exhibit of art and healing. A television interview was held in the northeastern Ohio viewing area about her book and personal art via a show titled: Creative Living. An art exhibit was featured in Clearfield, PA about a "Creative Senior." While Karen's main career was in professional counseling and family therapy, her main passion is encouraging the art process for those persons in nursing homes or community health programs. In witnessing the transformation of a person of health challenge as stroke, mental illness, cancer or autism, Karen has found this most rewarding.
